Nigeria on Wednesday marked its 65th Independence Anniversary with nationwide celebrations, cultural performances, and community events, as leaders urged citizens to embrace unity and resilience amid economic and security challenges.

In a national broadcast, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing the importance of productivity, innovation, and shared sacrifice. He highlighted recent gains in combating insecurity, particularly in northern states, while acknowledging that more work lies ahead in stabilizing the economy and improving infrastructure.

“We must channel the same spirit of courage and enterprise that won us independence into building a prosperous and secure future for generations yet unborn,” Tinubu said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also used the occasion to call for perseverance and national solidarity, urging Nigerians to “look beyond political and ethnic divides” in tackling insecurity, economic disparities, and social tensions.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu echoed similar sentiments, stressing that Nigeria’s future lies in collective action: “No government can do it alone. Our strength as a people is in our unity, resilience, and determination.”

While celebrations filled streets across major cities with music, dance, and parades, conversations online revealed a mix of emotions. Many Nigerians expressed pride in the nation’s endurance since 1960, but concerns over inflation, unemployment, and decaying infrastructure dominated social media discourse.

As Nigeria steps into its 65th year of independence, the calls for unity remain louder than ever — balancing hope for renewal with the pressing realities of governance and daily survival.
