A shocking domestic tragedy has rocked Akwa Ibom State as a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has reportedly died after being set ablaze by his wife, identified as Mrs. Rhety Haruna, following a heated argument at their home.

According to reports, the couple, who got married on April 21, 2025, had been living together in Akwa Ibom when a disagreement on September 22, 2025, spiraled out of control. In a moment of rage, Mrs. Rhety allegedly poured petrol on her husband and set him on fire, leaving him with severe burns.

Neighbours and onlookers immediately rushed the officer to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel battled to save his life. Sadly, Lieutenant Haruna succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Sources familiar with the couple’s relationship described their marriage as “peaceful” in the early months before frequent quarrels reportedly began over personal and financial issues.

Security authorities have yet to release an official statement, but local sources confirm that Mrs. Rhety has been arrested and is currently in police custody pending further investigation.

Lieutenant Haruna’s untimely death has sparked outrage and sorrow across social media, with Nigerians condemning the growing trend of domestic violence leading to fatal outcomes.

The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of conflict resolution and emotional control in relationships — especially among couples in high-stress professions like the military.
