Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has sparked political debate after openly criticizing politicians who pledge to serve only one term in office, describing such commitments as “illogical” and suggesting those making them may need psychiatric evaluation.

Soludo made the fiery remarks during a recent re-election campaign rally in Anambra South, where he called out political opponents ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

“When someone says they’re running for just one term, I think they need to see a psychiatrist. It doesn’t make sense,” Soludo said, addressing the crowd.

Although he didn’t name specific individuals, the statement is widely believed to be aimed at aspirants who have built their campaigns around a one-term agenda, vowing to “fix the country” in just four years before stepping down.

Soludo, a former Central Bank Governor and now one of Nigeria’s most prominent technocrats in governance, argued that such promises undermine the logic and structure of the country’s democratic system, which constitutionally allows elected leaders a maximum of two terms in office.

“The constitution provides for two terms. If you’re coming with a plan to do real work, you need time to execute and see results. One term is not enough — and promising that just to win votes is deceptive or delusional,” he added.

The governor’s comments have since gone viral, igniting intense reactions across social media. Supporters praised his boldness and political realism, while critics accused him of dismissing reformist intentions and stoking controversy for political gain.

Soludo, who assumed office in March 2022, is expected to run for a second term in 2026. His recent outburst signals not only his readiness to defend his seat in Anambra but also his growing influence in shaping the national political narrative ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
