For several hours a truck laden with 45,000 litres of petrol burnt at Kira Junction on the East-West Road in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State without any response from the several fire brigade offices contacted to quench the fire.

One of the sympathisers at the scene said the Rivers State Fire Service was contacted shortly after the fire started at 7am. But as of 2.30pm, the fire was still raging without any attempt to put out the fire.

It was only men of the Federal Road Safety Corps that were on ground to cordon off traffic.

The truck was taking product from Port Harcourt to Akwa Ibom State when the crash occurred.

A witness told the magazine that while trying to avoid hitting a slow moving truck that was crossing the road at that junction, the truck hit a side kerb and fell and caught fire. The injured driver and motorboys were taken to a hospital in Port Harcourt.

The Nigerian Ports Authority, Port Harcourt Refining Company, Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited and Notore Chemicals Limited, which are all nearby, have fire units. But they had not responded to the incident. It is also located near a mobile police formation.
