Pope Francis, born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 19, 1936, became the head of the Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. Until his death at the age of 88 years on the morning of Monday, April 21, 2025 he was down with what was described as “double pneumonia”. He died at his residence in the Vatican. But the sad news happened barely 24 hours after he responded to a cheering crowd as he was driven in a motorcade around St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Easter Sunday. It was like a farewell ceremony, as it was the first public appearance of the Pope since he was hospitalized for 38 days. Though doctors advised he took a rest for two months after leaving hospital last March 23, Pope Francis attended to some official duties, which included a meeting with King Charles and another with the American Vice President J. D. Vance. He would be missed for his respect for humanity and one who projected simplicity. He declined to live in the same Apostolic Palace that his predecessors lived, rather he chose the community setting, which he said was in tune with his ‘psychological health ‘. His tenure was an interesting time that saw two papal personages living in the Vatican for eight years after he was elected. The reason is that his predecessor, Pope Benedict who had chosen to resign on account of ill health died in 2022.
