The first heavy rain of 2021 fell in Port Harcourt and its environs on Monday, and created a reason for celebration by its residents.
A light shower occurred in Akpor part of the city on Sunday, by about seven minutes given an account by Chukwudi Eke-Ejelam, a resident of the area. But the downpour came about 2pm on Monday, taking many residents by surprise given the short spell of the dry harmattan season.
Ilanye Chapp-Jumbo, a strong campaigner for end to soot in the Port Harcourt atmosphere, heaved a sigh of relief with the coming of the rains, saying it will drive away the soot temporarily and give relief to the residents.
“First rain in Town axis of Port Harcourt,” she announced on her Facebook timeline. “This will keep the SOOT away. Thanks to God, giver of all good gifts,” Chapp-Jumbo added.
Emmanuel Alesi, another resident said the first rain has already brought calm and congenial temperature all around.
Nicky Nicky said the rains will wash away bad leadership in her area, “Let it rain and let it wash away our pains and usher in a new Eleme with credible leaders, selfless ones with conscience,” he said.
Jacob Chujor prayed that the rain should herald a year of glad tidings. “It is raining heavily in Rivers now. It is it is going to be a year of ‘the RAIN,’” he said.
Rivers State is known for having very early rains in Nigeria. It is located in the wet Niger Delta region with high rainfalls for most of the year.
