Nigerian security forces have intensified their crackdown on banditry in Kogi State, recording significant successes in an ongoing joint operation that has seen scores of armed criminals neutralised, their networks dismantled, and others flushed out of forest hideouts across the state.

In a press release issued by the Kogi State Police Command, the command confirmed that the sustained onslaught — involving joint police and military formations and supported by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Airwing — has yielded “fruitful results.” Precision air strikes and coordinated ground assaults were deployed with what authorities described as “vigour, commitment, and utmost professionalism.”

According to the police, the operation targeted long-established bandit camps within Kogi’s forest corridors, which have been linked to a recent spike in kidnappings, violent attacks, and threats to religious centres and communities. During the offensive, security forces dislodged criminal enclaves, destroyed logistics bases, and recovered arms and ammunition used by the gangs.

The offensive also extended into populated areas after fleeing bandits attempted to escape into nearby towns. In Obajana, close to the Dangote Cement Plant, troops reportedly repelled armed intruders following intense exchanges of gunfire, preventing the situation from escalating into civilian casualties.

While commending the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and banditry in Kogi State, the police command drew attention to a lingering and deeply troubling case. The command highlighted the tragic abduction of over 30 worshippers from an ECWA Church in Ayetoro-Kiri on Sunday, December 14. Authorities confirmed that the victims remain in captivity, stressing that their safe release is a pressing concern and remains a top priority for security agencies.

As operations continue, the police have issued a strong advisory to the public to remain vigilant. Residents are urged to report anyone seen with bullet wounds, suspicious injuries, or unusual behaviour to the nearest police station, as such individuals may be fleeing criminals from the ongoing operations.

The command also appealed for sustained community cooperation, emphasising that credible and timely information from the public is critical to dismantling criminal networks completely. “Security is a shared responsibility,” the statement noted, adding that collective effort between citizens and security agencies is essential to making Nigeria safer.

Security forces say clearance, pursuit, and follow-up operations are still ongoing across the forests and surrounding communities to prevent the bandits from regrouping, as authorities reaffirm their determination to restore peace, protect lives, and secure critical assets throughout Kogi State.
