Rivers State Government has stopped a proposed meeting of Igbo communities in Rivers State, citing security reasons.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, said security agencies had been directed to ensure that the meeting called by the United Igbo Communities for Oyigbo on Saturday did not hold.

Nsirim said the meeting could be a threat to peace and order in the area.

Security had beefed up in the state following attacks on security institutions in neighbouring Imo State. Oyigbo was a hotbed of violence during last year’s #EndSARS protests. Police stations were burnt down and several security operatives killed. The state government consequently placed a lockdown on Oyigbo which lasted for about three months.
