In one of the most bizarre smuggling attempts in recent history, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a staggering 10,603 donkey genitals being illegally transported to Abuja, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement against wildlife trafficking.

The shocking seizure was made during a routine check by Customs operatives who were alerted by the suspicious packaging and foul odor emanating from a truck en route to the Federal Capital Territory. Upon inspection, officials discovered hundreds of frozen donkey penises concealed in sacks, allegedly destined for export through unofficial trade routes.

According to Customs spokesperson Deputy Comptroller Hussaini Ahmed, the smugglers intended to sell the illicit animal parts in the black market, where donkey organs are in high demand for use in traditional medicine and purported aphrodisiacs, especially in parts of Asia.

“This is a clear violation of Nigeria’s wildlife protection laws and a major threat to our already declining donkey population,” Ahmed stated. “We are intensifying efforts to dismantle the network behind this illicit trade.”

Environmentalists and animal rights groups have condemned the incident, calling it a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to prioritize wildlife conservation and invest in modern tracking systems at border points.

Nigeria has become a key hub in the illegal trade of donkey hides and genitals due to growing global demand and porous borders, despite a government ban on donkey export since 2021.
