The Oregun community in Lagos has issued a stern public warning ahead of its Traditional Egungun Festival scheduled to begin on 27th November 2025, directing all residents and visitors to remain indoors during specific nighttime hours as traditional rites commence.

A public notice signed by HRM Oba (Dr) Olusesan Olukunmi Akingbola, Ikudoro I — the Olu of Oregun, orders that no one must be seen outside from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on the nights of 27th and 28th November 2025.

The community states that traditional rites and sacrifices will take place throughout the night and that all lights must be switched off by 10:00 p.m. sharp.

According to the statement, the Oje Parapo of Oregun will be performing age-long customs that require total compliance from both indigenes and non-indigenes.

The notice repeatedly warns residents to “BE WARNED!!” emphasising that anyone who disregards the instructions “shall face the consequences immediately.”

To maintain order, the Nigeria Police Force will reportedly be stationed at strategic locations across Oregun throughout the festival period to ensure security and compliance.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some residents expressing concern over the strict tone of the order, while others say it reflects longstanding cultural practices that must be respected.

For inquiries, residents were directed to contact the community via the phone numbers provided in the notice.

As the 2025/2026 Egungun Festival begins, Oregun is expected to enter a full nighttime lockdown, with authorities urging the public to strictly adhere to all directives for their safety and to ensure a smooth observance of the traditional rites.
