Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a ruthless reminder of their title credentials on Monday night, sweeping aside Mozambique 4–0 in a dominant Round of 16 encounter to book a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a pulsating display at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, the three-time African champions overwhelmed their opponents with pace, power and precision, as Victor Osimhen struck twice and Ademola Lookman produced a sensational man-of-the-match performance, registering a goal and three assists.

Nigeria seized control early, with Lookman breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute after a slick exchange with Akor Adams, curling a sublime effort beyond the Mozambique goalkeeper. The Atalanta winger then turned provider minutes later, delivering a teasing cross that Osimhen tapped home to double the Super Eagles’ advantage.

The onslaught continued immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Osimhen struck again, latching onto yet another inch-perfect Lookman assist to make it 3–0 and effectively end the contest. Akor Adams put the finishing touches on a commanding performance in the 75th minute, smashing in the fourth goal to complete the rout.

The statistics underlined Nigeria’s total dominance. The Super Eagles enjoyed 61 per cent possession, fired 22 shots with nine on target, and kept a vital clean sheet— their first of the tournament. Mozambique, making history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time, managed only two attempts and failed to register a single shot on target.

The emphatic win also etched Nigeria into the AFCON record books, as the Super Eagles became the first team to win their opening four matches at a single tournament, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals, brimming with confidence and attacking firepower.

With Osimhen in lethal form and Lookman orchestrating play at the highest level, Nigeria’s quest for a fourth AFCON title is gathering unstoppable momentum.

For the rest of Africa, the message from Fès was clear: the Super Eagles are soaring—and they are hungry for glory.
