A viral health video has sparked conversations across social media after breaking down the calorie content of Nigeria’s most popular swallows, helping Nigerians make better dietary choices.
According to the breakdown, fufu emerges as one of the healthiest options with just 150 calories per 100 grams, while amala surprises many with an even lower count of 100 calories per 100 grams. In comparison, garri contains about 280 calories, and pounded yam carries 260 calories per 100 grams.
However, not all swallows are equal. The video warns strongly against wheat swallow and semo, which contain 350 and 360 calories per 100 grams, respectively. Beyond their high calorie content, both are said to have a high glycemic index and are highly processed, making them less ideal for those conscious of weight and blood sugar levels.
“Fufu is the best so far, followed by amala, garri, and pounded yam. These are okay and healthy, provided you watch your portion sizes,” the health commentator explained. “But if you love yourself, avoid wheat and semo. They are not good for you, whether processed or blended at home.”
The video also highlighted that wheat contains gluten, an inflammatory protein that may trigger health issues in sensitive individuals, while semo is described as “bleached wheat,” making it just as problematic.
The advice has since gone viral, with many Nigerians rethinking their swallow choices and sharing the information online to promote healthier eating habits.
