A controversial bill is before the House of Representatives in the United States of America. It is to the effect of pushing for a third term for President Donald Trump. Andy Ogles, House of Representatives member from Tennessee is the brain behind the bill. Ogles, a Republican legislator is a member of the Freedom group in the legislature who supports Trump.
The legislator’s bill seeks to tinker with the Constitution’s 22nd amendment which states that no one should be voted for more than twice for the office of president.
Ogles, believed to have attracted some controversy even in the claims to his course of study in the university and his roles in places where he had worked as well as allegation of tax default, said, “I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms.” His reason is that Trump is the only person in modern history that has demonstrated that he could reverse the decay in the country, particularly the setback he claimed the administration of the immediate past president, Joe Biden had created for America.
For this reason, Ogles said, “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.” Though, for this to be achieved, it would have to go through a cumbersome process, which includes two-thirds majority in both houses of the American parliament and three-quarter of the states in America, the move has created apprehension in the country.
What does President Trump think about this? Though he has not reacted to the bill, there are concerns that the president may be expecting to stay in the White House beyond 2029. The media made reference to what appeared like jokes or innuendo by the president. One of this was a joke he made shortly after he was declared victorious at the poll. He was said to have told a meeting of Republican legislators that he could stay beyond his second term if they thought he had done a good job in office. That is the reason being advanced by Ogles who said that what Trump had done within days in office was enough to reward him with another term, so he could do much more.
While it is being argued that the idea might die during the process of constitutional review, what is certain is that the American Constitution is being put to test.
