In a bombshell announcement that has stunned the world, President Donald Trump declared early Saturday that U.S. forces have captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following a “large-scale strike” on the crisis-hit nation.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago.”

The operation unfolded overnight, with multiple explosions reported across Caracas and surrounding states, including Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. Eyewitnesses described low-flying aircraft, massive plumes of smoke rising from military sites like Fuerte Tiuna and La Carlota airfield, and widespread power outages plunging parts of the capital into darkness.

“My heart was pounding – it felt like the ground was shaking,” one Caracas resident told reporters, echoing accounts of panic in the streets as blasts echoed through the city.

Venezuela’s government swiftly declared a national state of emergency, condemning the strikes as “extremely serious military aggression” by the United States and calling for nationwide mobilization to resist. Officials accused Washington of targeting civilian and military sites in a bid to seize the country’s vast oil reserves.

Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, long accused by the U.S. of corruption and ties to drug trafficking, were reportedly extracted in a high-risk special forces raid. This unprecedented action culminates months of escalating U.S. pressure under Trump, including naval deployments, strikes on alleged drug vessels, and a $50 million bounty on Maduro. The move echoes historical interventions but marks a bold escalation in efforts to dismantle the regime.

Global reactions are pouring in, with allies condemning the strikes and opponents hailing it as a blow against authoritarianism. A White House briefing is expected soon.
