The police in Port Harcourt have confirmed the kidnap of a lecturer with the University of Port Harcourt, Jones Ayuwo.

Ayuwo was kidnapped in Khana Local Government Area on Sunday evening along with three mediamen, two of them working for Rivers State Television, who were returning from an event in the neighbouring Andoni Local Government Area.

But the kidnappers dropped off the mediamen along the way and took the lecturer away to an unknown destination.

Ayuwo is the Head of Linguistics Department at Uniport. One of the journalists, Godspower Anele, said they were all in Ayuwo’s car when they were ambushed by four armed men.

He said the kidnappers dropped off the three media people that accompanied the lecturer and went away with him and the video camera man of RSTV.

The other mediamen were Cletus Enerujama and one Thursday. They also lost their phones to the kidnappers. But they quickly reported to the police at Bori after they were dropped off by the kidnappers.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident but said the details were still sketchy.
