Violence, Shootings Mar Edo Election…APC Female Agent Shot Dead

Reports from several places across Edo State indicated that the governorship election was marred by violence with a female agent of the All Progressives Congress, APC, reportedly killed and several others injured Wards 9 and 10 of Ovia Southwest local government area of the state. Two persons were reportedly shot when thugs suspected to belong to an opposition party opened fire on the people killing the agent, said to be in her thirties, died instantly.

According to eye witnesses, the hoodlums had stormed the two wards while voting was in full swing, shooting directly into the midst of the people, two of whom were consequently hit in the process. Many were injured in the ensuing pandemonium. One of the eyewitnesses said “The shooting was entirely uncalled for, but they did it nevertheless. The PDP thugs came in a van which was most surprising to us because of the police presence. When the woman fell, we knew she had been hit. She died immediately.

“The other person said to have been shot at Ward 9 has not been confirmed whether alive or dead, but I gathered hers too is serious. Only God knows if she will survive it. Many others who survived gunshot wounds have been taken away in available vehicles,” he said.

In Etsako West, Owan West and other polling centres in Edo North, there were also reported cases of disruption of voting with thugs reportedly carting away ballot boxes in some cases.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC had also confirmed a shooting incident in Orhionmwon local government area of the state, saying it was working with the police and other security agencies to ensure the peaceful conduct of the ongoing governorship election. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Mahmood Yakubu who spoke this Saturday morning in Abuja in his preliminary address at the “Edo Governorship Election Virtual Situation Control Room” said it was in receipt of images showing the alleged hijack of electoral materials in Ward 9, Unit 15 of Egor local government area. Yakubu said while it was working to salvage the situation, it may be forced to take decisive action against results generated from the affected unit.
