Following the passing of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, on July 7, 2025, attention has turned to the question of who will become the next Olubadan. Among the most widely discussed names is that of High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former Governor of Oyo State and the current Otun Olubadan, placing him as the most senior figure in the civil line of Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy.
Oba Olakulehin died just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday, and nearly a year after ascending the revered throne on July 12, 2024. His passing has not only left a vacuum in the leadership of Ibadanland but has also activated one of Nigeria’s most transparent and structured traditional succession systems. Unlike many other royal institutions in the country, the Olubadan line of succession follows a strictly organized rotational system between two ruling lines — the Otun Olubadan (civil line) and the Balogun (military line). Chiefs ascend over time, and when the throne becomes vacant, the most senior chief in the appropriate line is selected.
Rashidi Ladoja, as the current Otun Olubadan, is next in line and is expected to succeed the late Oba Olakulehin. Born on September 25, 1944, Ladoja is a respected political and traditional figure. He served as the Governor of Oyo State between 2003 and 2006 and is also known for his involvement in the traditional affairs of Ibadan. Earlier this year, he represented Oba Olakulehin in the disciplinary action taken against two family heads (Mogajis) over land disputes, a move that further affirmed his standing within the Olubadan-in-Council.
His potential emergence as the new Olubadan would make history, marking the first time a former governor would ascend the throne. This development is significant, as Ladoja’s combined experience in governance and traditional leadership could bring a unique blend of modernity and deep-rooted cultural wisdom to the royal institution.
According to tradition, the Olubadan-in-Council will first confirm Ladoja’s eligibility, after which the nomination will be sent to the Oyo State Government for approval. Governor Seyi Makinde, who crowned the late Oba Olakulehin, is expected to play a key role in the formalities. Once approved, a grand coronation ceremony will be held, marking the official ascension of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
With this development, Ibadan prepares to witness another historic transition. Should Ladoja be confirmed, his reign could usher in a new era where traditional rulership embraces contemporary governance insight, making him not just a custodian of heritage but also a potential bridge between tradition and modern leadership ideals.
