Good morning, class. Today we want to take a look at the Ten Commandments as handed down to Moses on Mt. Sinai, the rationale for the “dos and don’ts” , their impact on our lives, how adequate they are and how civilisation has enhanced their effectiveness or otherwise.

Now, can somebody remind us of the Ten Commandments?

Yes, sir, I can.

Good. O ya, sink all your 32 into it. Pls, no beating about the bush. Be as concise as possible.

Okay, sir. The Ten Commandments handed over to our lord Jesus Christ are…

Wait a minute. It’s not Jesus but Moses. For your information even Mary, the mother of Jesus, had not been born then.

Thanks for the correction. Actually it was a slip of tongue. So as I was saying, the 10 commandments are as follows:
First Commandment: Thou shall have no other Gods before me.
Second: Thou shall not make for yourself any image in heaven, earth or under the earth to bow down to them.
Third: Thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.
Fourth: Thou shall keep the Sabbath Day holy.
Fifth: Honour thy father and thy mother.
Sixth: Thou shall not KILL.
Seventh: Thou shall not commit ADULTERY.
Eighth: Thou shall not STEAL.
Ninth: Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Tenth: Thou shall not covet.

Good job! Tell fellow pupils where they can get these commandments in the Bible.

These commandments can be found in Exodus 20: 1 – 17 and Deuteronomy 5: 6-21.

In modern jurisprudence which are the three worth focusing on today. Let’s see your preferred choices.

As for me I think it is the 8th commandment, thou shall not steal.

Why?

There is too much stealing in the land and we need to do something about that.

Okay, you, which is your preference.

I’ll go for the seventh which forbids me from committing adultery.

You? Why?

Wedding rings mean nothing again this GENZIE age. They are just ornaments for adorning the fingers and not as symbols of marital fidelity.

And you, what’s your take?

Me I go for the one wey say make we no kill, make we no commit murder.

Good one! In fact we may have to focus on this your choice on the dastardly death of that great journalist killed through the instrumentality of a strange phenomenon called PARCEL BOMB…

Sorry to cut you short. Have they arrested anybody for the killing?

For where? It is easier for a blind camel to pass through the needle’s eye than a slain journalist to pass through the ajar door of justice. It is 39 years exactly today October 19 that the body of Dele Giwa was torn into shreds by a parcel bomb in 1986.

What kind of human beings would turn the torso of a vibrant, able bodied, I mean KARUFI man of a journalist, to “human kilichi” on a Sunday morning at his breakfast table, and why? Why? Why for goodness sake? Who killed this gentleman of the PRESS?

WHO KILLED DELE GIWA(?) has long been the recurring decimal over the past 39 years!

Dele Giwa died at the age of 39. Thirty nine years after we still don’t know why and “who done it”.

AISHA was one of the contributing consultants on this 39th anniversary of “man’s inhumanity” to Giwa and his family. She has this to contribute: 🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
AISHA:
“”African journalists often face danger while investigating stories, and some have lost their lives in the line of duty””

She goes on by giving examples of those she described as victims of murderous high handedness under the cloak of “state security”. A notable one is Carlos Cardoso, a Mozambican investigative journalist who was shot dead in central Maputo in November, 2000 while investigating a $14 million fraud case involving the country’s largest bank. In Ghana, Ahmed Hussein was gunned down in Accra while investigating alleged corruption in African football and Ghana FA’s involvement. In Ethiopia an investigative journalist, one Sisay Fida, was killed by unidentified gunmen believed to be a hit squad ..in 2021. In Kenya another journalist, Betty Mtekhele, working with the Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation, was killed by three assailants who raided her house in 2021.

The question arises, has any of the killers been brought to book?

For where? Lack of diligent prosecution on the part of the authorities accounts solely for the clear case of injustice and apparent impunity, and encouraging further state sponsored terrorism against the Fourth Estate of the Realm. But that will not stop the rest of humanity from asking who killed the Dele Giwas of this world?

Beeni! Who killed Dele Giwa, the umpteenth time. Were he to be alive Giwa ought to be celebrating his 78th birthday.

The wicked have murdered sleep. “Won o ni kure”.

And what’s that gobbledegook supposed to mean? sir? “Olopa ewo ntepe “?. Abi knni (or what)?

This is the “kinni”. The Macbeths who killed the Duncans of Journalism will not die well.

Amin, sir. If they die well, they won’t sleep well because he who kills GBI will also die GBI.

Hmmm…Akiika!!
