Exactly 40 students selected from across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions were awarded N100,000 each on Thursday at the annual scholarship award of late Gani Fawehinmi, a lawyer and human rights activist.
Dipo Fashina, Chairman, Gani Fawehinmi annual scholarship awards, said the beneficiaries were shortlisted for the award after an intensive screening exercise conducted in their respective schools around the country.
Some of the students who spoke with TELL expressed gratitude to the family of Fawehinmi and organisers of the 2014 edition of the annual event.
Delivering a lecture titled,”The law, the Lawyer and the Public Spirit:Gani Fawehinmi in historical perspective,”Ademola Popoola, professor and Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife said Fawehinmi“had a passion for education as he had for law.”That he said, is the reason why, “Even in death, Fawehinmi’s memory and his good deeds is indelibly etched in the hearts of the downtrodden and oppressed.”
Mohammed Fawehinmi, first son of the late activist, Saheed Fawehinmi, another of his children and Fawehinmi’s wife, attended the event.
