Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu experienced a brief stumble during a ceremonial reception at Turkey’s Presidential Complex on Monday but quickly recovered and proceeded to clinch nine major bilateral agreements with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, underscoring the success of his state visit.

The incident occurred as President Tinubu, 73, walked alongside President Erdoğan during the official welcome parade. Aides said the stumble was likely caused by a loose carpet or metal fixture along the ceremonial route. He was immediately assisted, showed no signs of injury, and continued with the programme without delay.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga later confirmed that the Nigerian leader was “hale and hearty” and actively participated in all scheduled engagements.

Despite the viral circulation of the video clip on social media, the visit recorded significant diplomatic milestones. Nigeria and Turkey signed nine bilateral agreements spanning defence, trade, education, energy, agriculture, and investment, with both countries reaffirming a commitment to grow bilateral trade to $5 billion.

High-level discussions also addressed energy cooperation, regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, and economic partnerships, strengthening strategic ties between the two nations.

Public reaction online was divided. While some users mocked the brief fall and linked it to Nigeria’s broader challenges, others emphasized the substance of the visit, applauding the administration for securing tangible diplomatic and economic gains.

The Nigerian Presidency has downplayed the incident as a minor mishap, stressing that the state visit remains on course and continues to deliver outcomes aligned with Nigeria’s foreign policy and economic objectives.
