AMVCA 2026: Uche Montana Breaks Down in Tears, Linda Ejiofor Makes History with Double Win, Uzor Arukwe Clinches Best Actor
Emotional scenes at AMVCA 2026 as Uche Montana’s tearful Trailblazer Award speech, Linda Ejiofor’s unprecedented double victory and Uzor Arukwe’s Best Lead Actor triumph steal the spotlight at Eko Hotel, Lagos.
The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) delivered an unforgettable night of glamour, emotion and historic milestones as Africa’s biggest film and television stars gathered at Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
One of the most talked-about moments of the evening came when Uche Montana broke down in tears while accepting the prestigious Trailblazer Award. Visibly overwhelmed, the fast-rising actress dedicated the honor to her family, fans and aspiring entertainers across Africa, encouraging young dreamers to remain steadfast despite the challenges of the industry. Her heartfelt acceptance speech quickly went viral on social media, with many hailing her as one of Nollywood’s brightest new stars.
Linda Ejiofor etched her name into AMVCA history by becoming the first actress to win both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the same night. She secured Best Lead Actress for her remarkable performance in The Serpent’s Gift and Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Herd, receiving thunderous applause from the audience and cementing her status as one of the biggest stars of the night.
Uzor Arukwe also emerged as one of the evening’s top winners, taking home the Best Lead Actor award for his powerful performance in Colours of Fire.
Another emotional highlight came from Bucci Franklin, who fought back tears as he received the Best Supporting Actor award for To Kill a Monkey. In a touching tribute, Franklin dedicated the award to his late mother, drawing heartfelt reactions from the audience.
Veteran Nollywood icons Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo were honored with the Industry Merit Awards in recognition of their decades-long contributions to the growth and success of the Nigerian film industry.
In one of the night’s biggest surprises, Funke Akindele’s blockbuster movie Behind the Scenes, which reportedly surpassed ₦2 billion at the box office, failed to win any awards despite earning multiple nominations. The acclaimed filmmaker was absent from the ceremony, with reports indicating she was engaged in production commitments.
The event was hosted by comedian Bovi and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha, whose chemistry and humor kept the audience entertained throughout the evening. One of their standout moments was a hilarious reenactment of a past viral “snub” involving Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham, which had guests roaring with laughter.
Beyond the awards, the AMVCA 2026 red carpet once again stole the spotlight as celebrities showcased breathtaking fashion statements. Erica Nlewedim turned heads in a dramatic red velvet gown, while other stars dazzled in bold upcycled creations, ocean-inspired couture and mermaid-themed designs that drew comparisons to global fashion events such as the Met Gala.
Among the biggest film winners of the night was My Father’s Shadow, which further underscored the growing depth and creativity of African storytelling.
The 2026 AMVCA reaffirmed its reputation as the continent’s premier celebration of film and television, blending emotional acceptance speeches, record-breaking achievements, tributes to industry legends and unforgettable fashion moments. With clips of Uche Montana’s tearful speech, Linda Ejiofor’s historic double win and Uzor Arukwe’s Best Actor victory continuing to trend online, this year’s ceremony is already being described as one of the most memorable in the award’s history.
