After 56 agonising days of fear, uncertainty and prayers, the kidnapped pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom, bringing an emotional end to a traumatic chapter that gripped Nigeria.

The breakthrough was announced on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors,” Onanuga stated.

The release of the victims has sparked widespread celebrations, with families, community leaders and Nigerians expressing relief after weeks of anguish over the fate of the children and their teachers.

The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers stormed schools in the Ahoro-Esiele area of Oriire Local Government Area.

The attackers reportedly invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, and nearby primary schools in the Yawota and Esiele communities, taking away dozens of pupils and teachers.

A total of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers, including a principal, were reportedly taken into captivity and moved into the surrounding forests.

The incident shocked the nation, especially after the killing of one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics instructor and father of two, while in captivity. His death intensified public anger and increased pressure on authorities to secure the release of the remaining victims.

For nearly two months, families endured emotional trauma as security agencies intensified operations to locate the hostages and dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.

The rescue effort involved coordinated activities by security agencies, including the military, police, intelligence operatives and other specialised units. The difficult terrain of the Old Oyo National Park forest reportedly complicated efforts as security teams worked to track the kidnappers and ensure the victims’ safe return.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had visited affected communities and coordinated with relevant authorities, while President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to prioritise the rescue mission.

Parents, teachers’ unions and community members held prayers and protests demanding urgent action, as misinformation about the victims’ release circulated several times on social media before the official confirmation.

Following their freedom, the rescued pupils and teachers are expected to receive medical attention and psychological support before fully reuniting with their families.

Although details of the rescue operation remain limited, authorities are expected to provide further information on the circumstances surrounding their release and any arrests or security breakthroughs recorded.

The return of the victims has brought relief to Oyo State and the entire country, but it has also renewed calls for stronger security measures around schools and communities vulnerable to kidnapping.

As families finally welcome their loved ones home after weeks of uncertainty, Nigerians continue to demand lasting solutions to the insecurity challenges threatening lives and livelihoods across the country.
