Elder statesman Pa Reuben Fashoranti, has stepped down as the national leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political movement. A release quotes him as stepping down from the chair of Afenifere for reason of old age. The elder statesman said at 95 years of age he believes that he could no longer provide the necessary leadership for the group, having been slowed down by age. According to him, he decided to surrender the position to a more active person.

He has ,therefore, handed over to Pa Ayo Adebanjo, as acting head of the organisation. Adebanjo, he said, being of the Obafemi Awolowo political group would better lead the group. Adebanjo who until the announcement was the deputy leader will be assisted by the former financial secretary, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, the Alaago of Kajola Ago. But Adebanjo too will be 93 in April.

The announcement was made in Akure, during a meeting of the group. Fashoranti has been national leader of Afenifere for 13 years. He lost his daughter, Funke Olakunrin in 2019, after she was kidnapped and killed by person’s suspected to be herdsmen.
