APC Primaries: A Three-Horse Race?

Speculations are high that the list of aspirants for the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC has been pruned down to three. A yet unconfirmed report says the contenders may be Ahmed Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Rotimi Ameachi, former minister of transportation.

The speculation is based on the assumption that the wish of the APC governors that the candidate should come from the south has been adopted by the party and the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Though apart from Ken Nnamani, former president of the Senate who stepped down, no other aspirant has been heard to have announced that he was stepping down.

Tinubu is a front line contender in the race for the ticket. The former governor who is the national leader, though honorary, of the party is believed to be well connected within and outside the party. A politician who has supported many others before now is expecting that this was a time to cash his political I owe you. In the case of Ameachi, he would be expecting that his south south zone, the gain for the support to President Buhari since 2014. Osinbajo, on his part, is banking on his experience and contacts in the last seven years that he has served as vice president.

But that is not cast in stone, because some other aspirants like Governor Yaya Bello would not be persuaded to step down. Other aspirants like Tunde Bakare, pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly have arrived the venue.
