Ijebu Ode was gripped by solemnity on Monday as His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, GCON, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, was laid to rest following both traditional rites and Islamic burial rituals, in line with his personal wishes and cultural customs.

While the final interment was conducted in accordance with Islamic tenets at his private residence, sources close to the royal household have confirmed that the full range of customary traditional rites were duly observed beforehand, in keeping with Ijebu cultural protocols and royal responsibilities.

This clarification comes amid online debates sparked by the viral hashtag #AwujaleLivesOn, where some critics alleged that the traditional process was bypassed. A notable comment by X user @trueglobalv (Sanni Kọ́láwọlé.Ó.) reads:

“You intentionally omitted the part that all the traditional rites and rituals that were to be done, were done before releasing his body to his family. You are not honest, this clearly shows that all the lies these foreign religions say about our traditions are untrue.”

This highlights the importance of presenting a holistic account of the burial, reflecting the unique blend of tradition and faith that defined Oba Adetona’s life and reign.

RECALL: Oba Adetona was the architect of the “State Traditional Rulers (Installation and Burial Rites) Bill, 2020”, which was passed into law by the Ogun State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun in January 2022. The law allows royal families to have a say in how their kings are buried, while still accommodating necessary traditional rites.

Governor Abiodun had stated at the time:
“It clarifies and removes any ambiguity about the fact that the families of our Kabiyesis now have a say in how they are buried… This is very laudable.”

Oba Adetona, who ruled Ijebuland for more than 64 years, was widely respected for his bold reforms, progressive thinking, and deep respect for both cultural heritage and personal freedom of religion.

As dignitaries, religious leaders, and traditional custodians joined the people of Ijebuland in mourning and reflection, the legacy of the late monarch shines even brighter — as a bridge between tradition and modernity, faith and culture.
