Chaos erupted at Mandilas Market in Lagos Island on Tuesday after a heated dispute between two traders over job earnings turned violent, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Eyewitnesses said the altercation began when a Yoruba trader brought a customer to an Igbo trader for a business deal. When it was time to share the proceeds, an argument ensued. The confrontation quickly escalated into a fight, during which the Igbo trader allegedly stabbed the Yoruba trader.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead, sparking anger among his friends and supporters from the Agarawu area, who stormed the market in retaliation. Several innocent bystanders were reportedly injured in the chaos.

The Igbo trader accused of the stabbing was beaten by the crowd before being taken into police custody. The Lagos State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest and assured that normalcy has been restored to the area.

Authorities have called for calm, urging Lagos residents not to inflame ethnic divisions, while reinforcing security to prevent further violence.

The incident has raised serious concerns about fragile inter-ethnic relations in one of Lagos’s busiest commercial hubs.
