In a new directive that has sparked wide debate, the United States Embassy has announced that Nigerian visa applicants will now be required to provide their five-year social media history as part of the application process.

The embassy stated that the measure is aimed at strengthening background checks and ensuring national security. Applicants will be asked to submit details of their online presence across major platforms, including Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, and others, covering activity from the past five years.

This policy, already in place for many countries, means consular officers will now closely review applicants’ digital footprints to assess eligibility for US visas. According to US officials, the move is designed to help identify potential security threats and ensure transparency in visa applications.

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some see it as a necessary step in global security measures, others argue it could infringe on privacy and limit freedom of expression online.

Travel experts also warn that applicants must now exercise caution about their online activities, as offensive, misleading, or suspicious content could affect their chances of securing a visa.

The US Embassy maintains that the requirement is part of a global standard and applies not just to Nigeria, but to applicants worldwide.
