Building Collapse: Ekweremadu Advocates Seizure of Builder’s Licence

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has advocated seizure of professional licence for any building contrator involved in house collapse in Nigeria.

He made the call during plenary Tuesday, September 23 on the floor of the Senate.

Ekweremadu who blamed building collapse across the country on lack of professionalism and poor supervision of building construction, said if the sector is not properly regulated, the trend might continue.

He was reacting to a motion moved by Abdulmumin Hassan, Senator from Jigawa State. In a motion titled:

‘The Alarming Rate of Building Collapse in Nigeria,’ Hassan observed that it has become a necessity to look into the issue of incesant building collapse in the country.

The motion got the acceptance of the Senate, which thereafter, mandated its Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development to organize a public sensitization programme to educate the public on building collapse.

The Senate also agreed that there is need for the relevant authorities including government and agencies in the building sector to ensure stringent compliance with the laws regulating building in Nigeria.
