A commercial bus driver has been arrested after allegedly causing a fatal crash in an attempt to kill a passenger following a heated argument while travelling from Onitsha in Anambra State to Lagos.

The suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Ukwaja, a driver with Agbasi City Mass Transit, was accused of deliberately driving the bus into a stationary truck after a disagreement with a passenger onboard.

The incident reportedly occurred near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, earlier this month, when Ukwaja allegedly had a confrontation with the passenger seated in the front-right seat. According to reports, the driver was said to have threatened to “deal with” the passenger before allegedly taking the dangerous action.

Witnesses claimed the driver suddenly swerved off course and rammed the passenger’s side of the bus into a parked truck, resulting in a devastating crash.

The front-seat passenger died instantly from the impact, while several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed for medical attention.

Following the crash, the driver allegedly abandoned the wrecked vehicle and fled to his hometown in Imo State, sparking efforts to locate him.

Reports indicate that Agbasi City Mass Transit traced Ukwaja to Ahiazu Mbaise Police Station, where he was arrested on July 18. He was later transferred to Ogun State authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with many Nigerians expressing concern over passenger safety and the conduct of commercial drivers on long-distance routes.

Social media users have called for a thorough investigation into the matter, while transport stakeholders urged drivers and passengers to resolve disputes peacefully rather than allowing conflicts to escalate.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash as the suspect faces possible legal proceedings over the death of the passenger.
