Tension escalated in Lagos as soldiers from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) stormed the Ikeja Electric office in Oshodi, brutalizing staff members after their power supply was disconnected over unpaid bills. A viral video shows uniformed Ikeja Electric officers kneeling under the sun, reportedly forced into submission by the military personnel.

Sources reveal that the Sam Ethan Air Force Base had owed Ikeja Electric millions in unpaid electricity bills.

In an attempt to settle the debt, an agreement was reached for the base to pay ₦60 million monthly, but payments have reportedly not been made as expected. After two weeks of disconnection, the NAF claimed the power outage was compromising their security, leading to the aggressive retaliation.

Eyewitnesses reported that soldiers stormed the Oshodi office early in the morning, assaulting workers, seizing phones, and unleashing physical punishment. This follows an earlier attack on Ikeja Electric’s headquarters in Ikeja the previous day. At least 10 employees have been hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the attack.

Public reactions to the incident are divided. Some Nigerians express outrage at the military’s actions, calling it an abuse of power and a descent into lawlessness. Others, however, see it as poetic justice, citing the frequent complaints of overbilling and poor service delivery by Ikeja Electric.

As the controversy rages, questions arise about the military’s role in a civilian dispute and whether such forceful action was justified instead of a diplomatic resolution.

Meanwhile, Ikeja Electric has yet to make an official statement regarding the assault on its employees.
