Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly gone after activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding Elon Musk’s X platform (formerly Twitter) deactivate his account over a viral tweet attacking President Bola Tinubu.

Leaked documents show the DSS accused Sowore of spreading “misleading information” and “disparaging” Tinubu in a post that labeled him a criminal and ridiculed his anti-corruption claims. The secret police described the tweet as a threat to Nigeria’s national security and pressed for Sowore’s permanent ban on X.

But X has refused to bow to the pressure — at least for now. The platform notified Sowore of the government’s request, stressing that no action had been taken on the tweet. Sowore fired back defiantly, calling the DSS “lawless” and declaring he will never delete the post.

The move has triggered outrage online, with critics accusing the government of trying to gag free speech and intimidate dissenting voices. Supporters of Sowore argue the DSS is weaponizing national security claims to silence political opposition.

With Sowore standing firm and X resisting censorship, the standoff is fueling a nationwide debate about digital freedom, government overreach, and the boundaries of dissent in Nigeria’s democracy.
