Ebola: Ghana suspends Resumption of Tertiary Institutions

Ghana’s public tertiary institutions will reopen later than expected for the start of the new academic session, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Education has announced.

Ablakwa explained that the decision was to guarantee that an effective virus screening system was in place before foreign students traveling from affected West African countries arrived in the country.

He said that the reopening would be suspended until surveillance and screening at entry border points had been intensified.

The deputy minister also implied that the Ghanaian government was going to suspend international conferences and public gatherings.

He assured the public that the inter-ministerial board set up by the government and health institutions were vigilant and well equipped to handle an outbreak and prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

In Ghana, a number of 37 suspected cases have been assessed and all have proven negative.
