The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE has called on government at all levels to “set up isolation centres and units as proactive measures to stay a step ahead of the deadly Ebola virus.”
The body also commended the Nigerian media’s reportage and sensitisation measures taken as part of campaign against the disease, since its outbreak in Nigeria.
NGE however, warned that reactive steps would only result in risky fire brigade approach if proactive effort is not made to stem the tide.
Expressing concern on the need to urgently tackle the spread of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, the NGE appealed to all striking medical doctors to urgently return to work, as “the nation needs them now more than ever.”
As part of measures to prevent further importation of the deadly virus, NGE called on the Nigerian
Immigration Service and all concerned authorities to be “more alert to their responsibilities and ensure better policing of the nation’s land, sea and air borders to check the invasion of the Ebola virus.”
NGE also expressed worry over the rising cases of under aged female bombers in Northern Nigeria. Noting that over 120 days since the abduction of the students of Chibok Girls Grammar School, “the new trend in terror calls for concern.”
As part of proactive steps to avoid another academic down tool, the statement signed by Femi Adesina, NGE’s President called on the federal government to “settle all outstanding issues” with all Academic staff Unions in the country.
