The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has refuted claims of outbreak of an epidemic at the Hajj/Cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja. FAAN stated that the alleged outbreak of epidemic as a result of deplorable condition of facilities by some media houses on September 22 was untrue and capable of causing fear in the minds of intending pilgrims. Onyekwere Nnaekpe, general manager, corporate communication, FAAN, said that the story was not based on any personal observation of the facilities by the reporters but on the account of a supposed intending pilgrim.
“The Authority wishes to state that it is untrue that the toilet facilities at the terminal have been left unclean over the weeks without lights at night. There is no doubt that the 39 toilet facilities not 12 as claimed by the report provided at the terminal could be overstretched when used by an average of 500 pilgrims per flight for about two weeks, but it was uncharitable to say that these toilet facilities were not cleaned throughout this period,” Nnaekpe stated.
According to him, complaints can only made through the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, or other relevant agencies that have unfettered access to officials of FAAN rather than an intending pilgrim who claimed to have made compliant to the terminal authority.
FAAN reassured all intending pilgrims and the public that necessary machinery has been put in place to ensure that ensure that all Hajj Terminals across the country are safe, secure and in good hygienic condition to effectively handle Hajj operations.
