Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has rebutted media claims that the Federal Government has banned the consumption of Ponmo, a popular delicacy.
The Minister made this known at the inauguration of the third Council of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, NIAS.
He said the federal government was “trying to regulate the consumption of Ponmo for better leather industry as opposed to a ban.”
While inaugurating the new leadership of the Council, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hajiya Asabe Ahmed, said the various industry standards and the minimum operating procedures developed by the institute, has resulted in high consumer confidence in the industry.
In his acceptance speech, President of the third Council of the Institute, Professor Folorunso Adu, said the Institute would remain grateful for the tremendous support of the ministry, especially for the creation of the department of Animal Production and Husbandry Services.
Adu however bemoaned the lack of funds to operate zonal offices, to effectively capture the entire country and the takeoff of the Institute’s School of Postgraduate College to train and upgrade the skills of members.
