Jay-Z tops Forbes’ list of the 50 greatest rappers of all time, with Kendrick Lamar second, Lil Wayne third and Tupac Shakur fifth, reigniting debate among hip-hop fans over who truly deserves the crown.

American rap mogul Jay-Z has been ranked the greatest rapper of all time by Forbes, placing ahead of contemporary superstar Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, J. Cole and late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur in a ranking that continues to fuel debate among music fans.

The ranking, titled 50 Top Rappers Of All Time, was originally published in March 2024 by Forbes contributor Andrea Bossi and subsequently updated. It assesses rappers based on factors including critical acclaim, commercial success, cultural influence, innovation and the overall strength of their musical catalogues.

Jay-Z occupies the top spot, with Kendrick Lamar at No. 2 and Lil Wayne at No. 3. J. Cole takes fourth place, while Tupac Shakur rounds out the top five.

The rankings have renewed discussions across hip-hop communities, with fans debating whether commercial achievements, lyrical ability, cultural impact or contributions to the genre should carry the greatest weight in determining rap’s all-time best.

Drake ranks sixth, followed by Kanye West at seventh and Nicki Minaj at eighth. Veteran rapper Nas takes ninth place, while Eminem completes the top 10.

A$AP Rocky ranks 15th, followed by Lil’ Kim at 16, Tyler, the Creator at 17, Snoop Dogg at 18, Ghostface Killah at 19 and Common at No. 20.

For Jay-Z, the top position reflects a career spanning more than three decades, during which he has established himself as one of hip-hop’s most commercially successful and influential figures.

Beyond his music, the Brooklyn-born rapper has built a substantial business portfolio, including Roc-A-Fella Records and Roc Nation. His achievements also include 23 Grammy Awards, further cementing his standing as one of the most decorated artists in rap.

His supporters argue that his longevity, lyrical versatility, acclaimed albums and ability to remain influential across generations make him a deserving choice for the top spot. His transition from rapper to influential entrepreneur has also strengthened his reputation as a figure whose impact extends beyond music.

However, the ranking has not settled the longstanding argument over hip-hop’s greatest artist.

Some fans believe Kendrick Lamar deserves the No. 1 position, citing his storytelling, socially conscious lyrics and critical acclaim. Others argue that Lil Wayne’s influence on a generation of rappers and his extensive catalogue make his third-place ranking worthy of further debate.

Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. remain particularly contentious omissions from the top three, with supporters of the late icons pointing to their enduring influence, storytelling abilities and contributions to hip-hop during the 1990s.

Eminem’s 10th-place position and A$AP Rocky’s placement at No. 15 have also attracted attention, reflecting broader disagreements over how different eras, styles and achievements should be compared.

The debate is not new. Billboard and Vibe also placed Jay-Z at No. 1 on their 2023 list of the 50 greatest rappers, demonstrating the continued recognition of his influence within the genre.

Nevertheless, rankings of this kind remain subjective, as different publications apply different criteria when weighing lyrical skill, commercial performance, innovation and cultural legacy.

Forbes’ selection places particular emphasis on the breadth and longevity of an artist’s career, an approach that favours Jay-Z’s sustained success in music and business.

Whether fans agree with the order or believe their favourite rapper has been overlooked, the list has once again put one of hip-hop’s most enduring questions at the centre of the conversation: who truly deserves to be called the greatest rapper of all time?
