The area ‘G’ Command of the Nigeria Police has arrested and arraigned three siblings; Bakare Aina, Bakare Ganiyu, Bakare Adebayo, and Ibom Egbe, their tenant before Magistrate, O.A. Layinka of an Ojokoro Magistrate’s Court, Ijaiye, Lagos for allegedly smoking Indian hemp and assaulting three police Officers on duty.
The four defendants were arraigned before the court on a seven-count charge bordering on conspiracy to wit stealing, unlawful possession of weeds and assault on three police officers.
TELL gathered that trouble started on Wednesday following a tipoff that suspected Indian hemp peddlers were having a field day in the area.
Prosecutor says on getting the information, a team of anti-robbery policemen attached to the area ‘G’ command and led by Abimbola Oyewole, swung into action raiding the residence of the defendants at Apata street, Okeira, Ogba, a Lagos suburb.
Police says the suspects resisted arrest and in the process assaulted policemen in the course of their lawful duties.
Inspector Lugard Ahunle, the police prosecutor, said the offence is punishable under sections: 409, 406, 134, 44, 327,117 and 172 of the criminal laws Vol. II of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the four defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them and appealed for bail.
The defendants insisted that they were simply seating in front of their house when policemen swooped on them in what they described as arbitrary arrest.
After taking their plea, Layinka granted the suspects bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one responsible surety each.
They have been remanded in custody for not been able to meet up with the bail terms while the case was adjourned till April 22, 2014 for mention.
