Ibadan witnessed history at Mapo Hall as Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was formally installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a moment that sealed his transformation from political gladiator to revered monarch.
For Ibadan people, the bond with Ladoja runs deep. They elected him senator in 1992, governor in 2003, and today, fate crowns him king. His coronation, graced by dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been celebrated with a fervor rarely seen in the ancient city.
But Ladoja’s journey to the throne is nothing short of epic. In 2005, he was forcibly removed from office in one of Nigeria’s most dramatic impeachment sagas, orchestrated by the late Lamidi Adedibu with the backing of Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala and NURTW strongman Elewe Omo. His refusal to part with ₦15 million from the ₦65 million security vote cost him the governor’s seat.
