HAWKERS ATTACK KAI OFFICIALS, DAMAGE OFFICIAL VAN

Unidentified highway hawkers on Wednesday attacked some officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI under the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, M.O.E, and damaged their official van at Berger bus stop, Lagos.

The incident happened right in front of the Berger bus stop of the Lagos Bus Rapid Terminal, BRT, along the Lagos – Ibadan expressway.

Trouble started when the hawkers sighted a stationary KAI van parked in front of the BRT terminal with some of their officials seated.  Apparently suspicious of the presence of the KAI officials, the hawkers immediately formed a mob, brandishing broken bottles, sticks and heavy stones and raced towards the van, destroying the windscreen, the headlamps and the windows.

The black MOE van with registration number EPE 84 AC was later towed by another official van which was brought by some other officials of the ministry.

According to a senior official of the ministry who pleaded anonymity, the KAI officials had no intention of making any arrest prior to the attack. The hawkers were just intimidated by the presence of the van and their officials.

Although two hawkers were later seen being shoved and bundled into a waiting van, it was not clear if they were the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
