The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its July 2025 World Economic Outlook update, has revised Nigeria’s economic growth projections upward, forecasting a 3.4% GDP expansion in 2025 and 3.2% in 2026. This positive adjustment reflects growing optimism over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s macroeconomic reforms, improved oil production, and easing inflationary pressures.

Under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has embarked on sweeping reforms aimed at tackling decades-old economic vulnerabilities, including the country’s dependence on oil revenues and costly subsidy programs. Key measures, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira, have helped stabilize public finances, reduce fiscal strain, and send stronger signals to investors. These steps, coupled with IMF-backed policy support, have also improved revenue allocation and attracted renewed investor interest.

However, the path to sustainable prosperity remains challenging. Inflation and unemployment continue to weigh heavily on citizens, with many experiencing short-term hardship as the economy undergoes structural adjustment. Economists note that while a 3.4% growth rate is a step forward, Nigeria would need sustained annual growth of at least 6% to significantly reduce poverty and improve living standards.

Despite these hurdles, Tinubu’s administration is positioning the nation for greater self-reliance by empowering states, fostering global trade partnerships, and pushing for infrastructure and industrial expansion. The IMF’s upward revision suggests that these policies are beginning to yield results, but analysts warn that sustained effort is crucial to transform potential into long-term prosperity.

In the wake of the IMF report, prayers have poured in for the President’s success, with citizens asking for divine guidance, strength, and unity to drive Nigeria toward peace, justice, and economic progress.
