Turnout in some areas of Lagos was considerably low. At Unit 028, Ajiboye Street, Alapere, Ketu, only 150 voters were accredited out of the 803 that registered. About 20 voters whose fingerprints could not be captured were accredited manually.
But at Unit 133, Agboyi-Ketu, there were no elections, as INEC officials were not present. Shehu Mikail, one of the voters, who said he has been at the polling unit since 6 am, as well as one Samuel Anaekwe, another voter, lamented that they risked being disenfranchised because they could not vote.
TELL visited the INEC office at Alapere where one of the officials explained that the Commission was understaffed and so could not deploy staff to the affected areas. He also showed the magazine about four other ballot boxes ready for collection but which were lying idle because there was nobody to take them.
On his part, he said he could not leave their office, as he had to monitor what happens in the office.
At the INEC office too, some angry voters from unit 87, Alapere stormed the place, asking for their ballot box. They confronted one NYSC ad-hoc staff whom they said took their box to another location.
She confirmed that she took their ballot box to unit 88 and dropped it there. The voters, who practically had to drag her into a car so she could go and retrieve their ballot box from the wrong unit in order to start the accreditation and voting exercise, said they have been waiting since morning at the polling unit.
As at the time we left the centre, she was asking that a policeman should accompany her in the car, which the voters brought and take her to where she would collect the box.
