In a swift political development, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has officially assumed office as the Chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of Tunde Azeez.

Azeez, who had served just over 100 days in office, reportedly stepped down due to health challenges, prompting the Lagos State House of Assembly to approve the elevation of Obasa, who was formerly the Vice Chairman, to the top position during Wednesday’s plenary session.

The Assembly’s unanimous decision formalised the transition, with legislators citing the need for stability and continuity in local governance.

The appointment, however, has reignited discussions around nepotism and political influence, as Abdul-Ganiyu’s initial nomination by his father in 2021 had stirred public criticism before it was withdrawn. His eventual emergence as LG chairman is now drawing fresh attention to political succession within Lagos State’s ruling circles.

Local residents expressed mixed reactions — while some praised the move as a seamless continuation of leadership in Agege, others questioned the transparency of the process.

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa is expected to continue implementing existing development plans for the area, focusing on infrastructure, youth empowerment, and community health initiatives as part of the LG’s ongoing projects.
