In a tragic and disturbing case that shocked the nation, two Las Vegas teenagers, Sierra Halseth and Aaron Guerrero, were sentenced to life in prison for the grisly murder of Sierra’s father, Daniel Halseth, in April 2021. The murder stemmed from Daniel’s objection to their relationship, which had been forbidden months prior.

The saga began in 2020, when Sierra, then 15, started dating 18-year-old Guerrero. By December of that year, both families had discovered the teens’ plot to elope to Los Angeles and intervened, forbidding further contact. Daniel, a 45-year-old father of three and former spouse of ex-Nevada State Senator Elizabeth Halseth, specifically barred his daughter from seeing Guerrero.

Unbeknownst to him, Sierra and Guerrero continued their relationship in secret and hatched a deadly plan. On April 9, 2021, the pair murdered Daniel in his northwest Las Vegas home, stabbing him over 70 times with various sharp tools purchased just a day earlier. They attempted to dismember his body, then placed it in a sleeping bag and set it on fire in the garage in an effort to cover up the crime.

After the murder, the teenagers fled to Salt Lake City, using Daniel’s debit card to fund their escape. They were caught on surveillance using the card and were later tracked down and arrested on a train. Most chillingly, a video filmed during their time on the run surfaced, in which Guerrero declared, “Day three after murdering somebody,” as Sierra giggled beside him.

The teens were extradited to Nevada and initially pleaded not guilty to nine charges, including murder with a deadly weapon, arson, robbery, and conspiracy. However, in May 2022, both pleaded guilty and were sentenced in October to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 22 years.

Daniel’s family, particularly his mother Christine, continues to mourn the loss of a father who only sought to protect his daughter from a destructive relationship.
