In the countdown to his public defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the senator representing Edo South senatorial district on the platform of the Labour Party, LP, Neda Imasuen, says his decision to dump his party is not out of opportunism but strategic.
With all arrangements in top gear to welcome him into the APC by its leadership at the national and state levels on Thursday June 12 in Benin City, Senator Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, cited the disarray in the LP as influencing his decision to leave.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City to mark his second year in office, Imasuen, explained that the move is aimed at better aligning Edo South with federal development priorities under President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.
Defending his defection as being strategic and not opportunistic, Imasuen enumerated his achievements both in his legislative duties and community service, notably the Federal College of Education, Abudu (Establishment) Bill, and successful resolution of over 20 public petitions. Apart from numerous scholarships awarded to students in his constituency, Senator Imasuen also listed vocational training schemes, agricultural support programmes, and a rural initiative in the training of traditional birth attendants as some of his achievements.
Describing agriculture as the cornerstone of national survival, he also highlighted his efforts in promoting agriculture, stating that several agricultural programmes had been implemented in Edo South especially training of farmers in modern techniques and provision of tools for enhanced productivity.
“We’ve focused on rubber, cocoa, and cashew farming. There are testimonies from farmers whose yields have improved significantly,” he said. According to him, “These interventions have made a significant difference in the lives of ordinary Nigerians”.
Acknowledging challenges in sustaining constituency projects, Senator Imasuen advocated stronger local government cooperation, while pledging continued focus on health, youth empowerment, and rural development. He expressed his firm support for President Tinubu’s policies.
