Nigeria’s healthcare system is set to face major disruptions as the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike, effective Saturday, November 15, 2025.
The announcement, issued late Friday, signals the shutdown of critical services across federal, state, and local government hospitals, including laboratories, pharmacies, radiology units, and emergency supportive departments staffed by JOHESU members.
According to the unions, the strike follows the Federal Government’s alleged failure to meet long-standing demands, including: – Full implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustments – Settlement of arrears and withheld allowances – Improved funding for public health institutions – An end to discriminatory practices in the sector
JOHESU stated that several ultimatums were issued with no meaningful response from government authorities, leaving the unions with “no alternative but to withdraw services indefinitely.”
Health analysts warn that the strike could severely affect patient care nationwide, especially in government-run facilities that rely heavily on JOHESU professionals, who make up a large percentage of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
As of press time, the Federal Ministry of Health has not issued an official response.
