All activities hitherto lined up to commemorate the fifth coronation anniversary of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare 11, have been postponed. Oba Ewuare 11, was crowned October 20, 2016, a date that also coincides with his birthday. He turns 68 this year. According to a statement dated October 11, 2021, signed by the secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, BTC Frank Irabor, the postponement of the anniversary celebration is in honour of the memory of Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, billionaire business mogul and philanthropist, who died August 8, 2021. He was buried Friday October 8 in Benin City, Edo State.
The terse statement by the BTC reads:
“The Benin Traditional Council on behalf of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare 11,Oba of Benin, wishes to inform the general public that as a result of the demise of Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, and his burial few days ago, His Royal Majesty has directed that all the events lined up to mark the fifth coronation anniversary celebration of His Royal Majesty on 20th October, 2021 should be postponed in honour of the late Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo, who was an illustrious son of Edo State in whom we were well pleased. May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace”.
