Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State Governor, has declared Monday, October 27, 2014 as a public holiday in the state to celebrate the beginning of a new Islamic year, Hijra 1436.
Speaking today at the Osogbo township stadium during a ceremony marking the new year, which began today, Aregbesola said the holiday would enable Muslim faithfuls to reflect on the lessons of Hijra and imbibe the right islamic characters.
Aregbesola noted that Islam is not a religion of violence and any person, group or sects who indulge in violence or other related vices are not true followers of Islam.
He then called on all Muslims to use the occasion of the celebration to move closer to God and live peacefully with their neighbours.
