The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a self-proclaimed traditional ruler who paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three accomplices, thwarting an elaborate plan to mislead the public through an unlawful installation ceremony.

The suspect, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, 65, from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom, Ideato North LGA of Imo State, was arrested alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). They are currently being held at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

Police intelligence revealed that the group had concluded arrangements to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. Acting swiftly, officers sealed off the venue to prevent a breach of public peace and to protect unsuspecting citizens from being deceived.

The Command confirmed that adequate manpower, including operatives of the Eko Strike Force and other tactical units, were deployed to the area to ensure the event did not proceed. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court once inquiries are completed.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, cautioned the public to remain vigilant against impostors seeking to exploit revered traditional institutions. He stressed that such acts are unlawful, undermine public order, and will be met with firm enforcement of the law.

Meanwhile, the story has triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with many Nigerians mocking the audacity of the impostors. On X (formerly Twitter), one user joked: “From Obi Cubana to Obi of Lagos—these people will not kill us with comedy.” Another quipped: “₦1.5 billion palace for a title that doesn’t exist? Even Nollywood no fit script this one.”

Others, however, expressed concern about the growing trend of impersonation of traditional rulers, warning that such antics could undermine Nigeria’s cultural values if not tackled decisively.

For now, the fake “Obi of Lagos” and his alleged conspirators remain behind bars as police press forward with their investigation.
