Power Minister, IGP Disu Move to Crush Power Infrastructure Vandalism with New Joint Task Force

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to tackle the persistent vandalism of Nigeria’s power infrastructure as the Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu agreed to establish a Joint Task Force dedicated to protecting critical electricity assets across the country.

The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the Minister to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Tegbe, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power and other senior ministry officials, commended the Nigeria Police Force for its performance under the leadership of IGP Tunji Disu, describing the Force as a critical partner in securing the nation’s electricity infrastructure.

The Minister expressed concern over the growing rate of vandalism targeting power installations, describing it as one of the biggest obstacles to achieving stable electricity supply in Nigeria.

According to him, the destruction of transmission lines, substations, transformers and other critical assets continues to undermine government investments in the power sector, disrupt electricity supply to homes and businesses, and slow economic growth.

To address the challenge, Tegbe proposed stronger collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Power and the Nigeria Police Force, including the creation of a dedicated Joint Task Force that would focus exclusively on protecting power infrastructure across the country.

He also called for increased surveillance of critical electricity installations and closer coordination between security agencies and the Ministry to deter criminal activities targeting the nation’s energy assets.

Responding, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu welcomed the Minister’s visit and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s critical national infrastructure.

The Police Chief assured the Minister that the Force would continue to strengthen security around power facilities and ensure that individuals involved in vandalism, sabotage and other related offences are identified, arrested and prosecuted.

IGP Disu expressed the Force’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Power in establishing the proposed Joint Task Force, noting that the initiative would significantly enhance the protection of electricity infrastructure and personnel working within the sector.

He described the power sector as one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable and strategically important industries, emphasizing that safeguarding energy infrastructure is essential for national development and economic stability.

The proposed task force is expected to improve intelligence sharing, coordinated security operations and rapid response to threats against electricity infrastructure across the country.

The meeting forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply through enhanced collaboration among government institutions and security agencies.

The initiative also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure development, improved public services and stronger institutional partnerships to drive economic growth.

If implemented, the Joint Task Force is expected to play a key role in reducing power infrastructure vandalism, protecting government investments in the electricity sector and improving the stability of Nigeria’s power supply.
