A hit-and-run driver, on Monday, knocked down two highway officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, LAWMA, along Iyana Oworo Expressway. The two LAWMA officials involved in the accident were identified as Lateefat Sulyman and Fatimoh Ajetunmobi
According to a colleague of the victims, who witnessed the accident but pleaded anonymity, the driver, was trying to beat the traffic jam when he bumped into the victims.
While Sulyman was crushed to death instantly, Ajetunmobi was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Although the driver was said to have escaped, the vehicle’s number plate fell in the process and has been handed over to security officials.
The eyewitness also said Sulyman, an indigene of Abeokuta, Ogun State, had promised to resign from the job in December so as to set up a business of her own.
“She was the one who took care of her parents. She told me about her plan to leave this job by December and start her own business with the money her husband gave her. I told her to quit immediately but she said she wanted to wait till they moved to her husband’s house. We don’t pray for this, God. This is a great loss,” she said in tears.
While confirming the incident, Ola Oresanya, General Manager, LAWMA, said Ajetunmobi was responding to treatment.
“It happened just as they resumed for work. It was unfortunate that we lost a worker to the accident. The other woman is responding to treatment in the hospital. The number plate has been handed over to the police and we are making efforts to ensure that the driver is arrested,” Oresanya said.
The corpse of the dead official was later taken to an undisclosed morgue by a combined team of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and the Lagos State Transport Management Agency, LASTMA officials.
